Blogstream Help

 Rating Blogs...
Back to Full Blog

A new feature has been added to Blogstream, the ability to "rate" a blog from 1-5 stars. 1 star being worst, 5 stars being best.

If you are logged in, a rating box will appear in the top right. Just click on the star you wish to rate the blog at. For example, if you rate the blog 4 stars out of 5, place your mouse on the 4th star and press the mouse button.

You should see the first 4 stars light up orange.

After a blog receives 20 ratings from 20 different members, the stars will show up blue to indicate the average rating given by members.

You can change your rating at any time by just clicking on a new star. Only your most recent rating counts (you cannot vote multiple times).

Currently if you rate a blog on one computer, and then visit blogstream from another computer, your old rating will not appear in orange in the stars. Do not worry, your rating is still recorded in the system, it is just not appearing on that computer. You can rate it again if you wish, but it is not necessary and will not do any harm. The last rating entered is stored in the web browser of the computer you used (for display purposes), but it is also recorded on our computers permanently.

Hello Pioneer, as you will observe on her latest blog, my friend, Mrs God, host of 'Pissing With Impunity' is VERY upset. Her hit total (previously, plus 2000) has been reduced to zero. And so I say to you: "Oh Pioneer, a great injustice has been visited upon Mrs God. Beware the wrath of the cleaning obsessive - (s)he, of ambivalent gender identity, has a rubber broom which (s)he yields with righteous wrath. Be warned: a visit to HQ Blogstream could reak a condition of terrible tidiness - nay, sterility! -, that would entirely, and irrevocably, obliterate the disorder you so cherish. Restore to Mrs God that which is rightly hers - Justice demands it!"

DeBunkem, Mrs. God lost her visitors also? She might deserve it after that thing with Blog Stalker last night. I, on the other hand, lost my visitors for no good reason. I'd like them back but Pioneer has yet to return them. Oh, sorry Pioneer, have you discover what happened to my visitors yet? Deby @ Crusty middle-aged woman ~¿>{

No idea what caused the problem with the counter -- I will have to look into it when I can. The counter system is going to be changed anyway (and reset) since it is not as accurate as I would like.

I will look into the problem next week, I unfortunately cannot look this weekend.

Ok, i think I located the problem with counters resetting. I unfortunately cannot fix your counter back to where it was, as I need to lookup a previous value to replace -- I will have to do that next week, sorry. However, the counters should not, hopefully, reset back to zero again. I must have made some quick temporary software code for the hit counter and made a mistake... hopefully it is fixed now. Sorry for that. :)

Hello John (you seem to have deleted a posting?), I have noticed that a problem with my friend Mrs God's ('Pissing with Impunity') blog. Basically, when people leave comments, or she posts something, this is not registering in the Updated Blogs window. Following on from the deletion of her hit count, this is a bit much don't you think. If you could mend this blip that'd be great. Thanks ~ DeBunkem.

DeBunkem --- I have no idea what you are talking about.

BTW, if anyone has a specific technical issue please go to the contact page and write customer service directly rather than posting here. It is much more likely to be handled properly and quickly.

Thanks.

I noticed recently from the MY field page right the BLOG link has been removed. I have always found it a convenient and close manner of refreshing my Blog in order to see if appearances reflected my intent.
<   <<   >>   >

by Stealtharachnid (PM , CC ) on Thursday December 1, 2005 @ 12:39 PM

Yes, it has moved to just above the name of your blog on the left/middle area...

I recently added new blog navigation and it seemed (as of now) just as conveninent but will make the right side less cluttered (and allow me to put other items there).

Give it a try for a few days and see if you still have problems using the new location. I'm trying to cleanup the pages more and offer new features at the same time.

I think the new nagivation bar makes it much easier to browse around the site.

<   <<   >>   >

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Thursday December 1, 2005 @ 12:43 PM

Oh I see what the problem is -- "My Blog" in navigation is not clickable and you can't do a 'refresh'. Ok I'll work on that... I'll maybe keep it black to show you are on that page but make it clickable.

-John

<   <<   >>   >

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Thursday December 1, 2005 @ 12:44 PM

Ok -- for now I have made the "My Blog" link in the navigation bar still show black, but it is clickable. So you can use it to refresh your blog page as you use to use the one in the right hand side.

Given we can sort by custom palette, is it possible that permissions can be set so that I could view the pallete in use by other bloggers? I think this feature would allow the opportunity for us to learn from each other. Also, personally, do you think dogs go to Heaven? I mean you are the Man and the authority here in this world.

What you have here is really important. We can and are building a society here that is real yet engineered to help each of us. I am talking about the Blogstream community as a whole. The problem as I see it is as the community gets larger and larger each of us is apt to feel smaller and smaller. I think I am seeing that. Plus the countless blogs that get no comment. This is because we are noticed over time by a lesser proportion of those out here. ---------Is there a way on a topic by topic basis, the author can be permitted to identify their specific topic to a specific group......much in the same fashion that we do for our entire blog? This could prove important where someone writes a topic far from the interests of their normal visitors, their topic is ignored. Wrong word. It's not ignored, it is unseen, unfound.

I began a new blog titled "Another LDS Genuine Article". I was able to copy my customized work pallet from my customized site to this new one. That is I copied it to the work pallet, then through proper procedure, copied the work pallete to the live pallet. For a moment the new colors came up on the site. But the next time I went in it is back to default. The custom work pallet is there. Can you assist please?

Hello John, I just submitted a post where I talk about a proposed project of mine - to set up a blog as an online resource for local historian's in my locale - and I mention the possibility that, in the not too distant future we may be able to include our voices in blogs (I'm an historian by the way - and that has included Oral History). I just thought that I'd ask you whether you think that this is likely? When you get a moment to reply, could you leave it as a comment on my blog, as my email is down at present. Thank you

<   <<   >>   >

by Stealtharachnid (PM , CC ) on Tuesday January 31, 2006 @ 12:10 PM

Stealth -- I do not understand what you are asking. Nothing has changed here regarding the icons, their storage, or display. If your icon is displaying differently then it may be a problem with your browser. It seems to be animating fine for me.

On a side note, when you upload an icon, we "stretch or shrink" it to fit into the icon space. Animated gifs do not like to be stretched or shrunk... so this may cause rendering issues in general. However, your icon has always worked well from what I have seen.

Since I've got you on the line, I am wondering if there is any control over the color of the bar at the bottom of all the comments to a given topic (page 2, as it were) Something caused mine to change color. I am not seeing it in the palette.
<   <<   >>   >

by Stealtharachnid (PM , CC ) on Tuesday January 31, 2006 @ 1:11 PM

I just added that bottom bar to make it more clear... there is currently nothing in the palette control to change that but I will look into adding sometihng for that.

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Tuesday January 31, 2006 @ 1:58 PM

A suggestion: I think it would be an aid to everybody if there was a visible number associated with each comment. That way in some of our long strings it becomes easier to reference a remark well up the string.

While I applaud the idea I have certain reservations about it. For example, someone visits my blog herein and takes offense to something I wrote. As retaliation they get several people to visit my blog and rate it in such a way it ultimately gets a bad rating.

Perhaps, unfairly. How will this sort of abuse be prevented? Thank you for your time.

<   <<   >>   >

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Thursday February 16, 2006 @ 12:00 PM

I am not sure about the rating a blog - it's a bit like being at school in PE and watching the best be selected first leaving the runts disappointed and unhappy.

Is it possible to have emoticons placed within the text at strategic points where the writer wants them?

The advanced text editor is extremely unstable - it disappeared on me several times whilst I was blogging today, especially when I moved my cursor up to the formatting bar. I ended up having to take avoidance action by making wide sweeps out of the text box, up over and down, to where I wanted to work on the formatting bar!!! (Strange to say the least...)

Thanks for replies on two of my queries, I shall try following them through.

I have, much to my pleasure received a comment to my article today and I should like to reply to the person who commented. You have no reply box or button. The only thing I can do it seems, is to send a personal email - not quite the same thing as maintaining a link to ones blog. Is there likely to be any development on this feature?

by ZACL-1 (PM , CC ) on Sunday February 19, 2006 @ 1:11 PM

"Stealth -- Sorry, that would be an invasion of privacy."

But Pioneer, you are going to be opening up my travels to public view. Is that not the same thing. Why don't you simply allow the blogger to turn off an external view of their travels? As for a public view of my travels in leaving comments, I think it reasonable that I should be able to set privacy on that as well.

<   <<   >>   >

by Stealtharachnid (PM , CC ) on Friday March 3, 2006 @ 12:51 PM

Actually it's not the same thing --

I assume you are talking about me allowing people to see public comments/posts you have made in an easy to find location. There is a difference with this -- you have chosen to make yourself known publically in those instances -- there is no way to hide the fact that you left a public comment... you are also indexed into external search engines. Anyone can see where you left a comment, we are just considering making it more convenient. I may consider adding an option to hide your comment log, as that is a reasonable request -- however regardless of whether it is hidden, anyone will be able to locate your comments using our search, or an external search engine.

You are asking me to show the trails/visits of people that don't perform a public action... and suggesting they have to opt-out from that feature. I don't think it is reasonable to tell people that just creating an account means they may be monitored by anyone else on the system, even if they don't do anything publically.

<   <<   >>   >

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Friday March 3, 2006 @ 1:03 PM

Can you provide another search criterion for bloggers currently online? I think that would be helpful to see how manny of the hundreds of friends I have might immediately see my comment. I don't know if you can do this given you are only human.

A technical improvement

1. Create a field (bottom right) on the blog page that shows the titles and descriptions of other blogs of the owner of the blog being read.

2. Adopt the feature found at blogster where and individual topic can be designated as any one of a variety of subjects....like you currently do for an entire blog. Most people wish to talk about all kinds of subjects within their blog. But most of us will not know that presently without a painstaking search.

I wonder if there is a way that you can do something with the longevity of a blog. Perhaps, some kind of symbol recognizing certain landmarks reached. It would help with the energy level.

Pioneer,
A technical question. I have more than one blog under Stealtharachnid. I have deactivated all but one. Although they are deactivated, will there posts and comments be saved should I reactivate them at a future date since I still have an active blog as stealtharachnid? How long?

Hey, stealth, I had the same question.

I recently reactivated a blog, and everything was there where I left it. You should be fine.

Pioneer, I love the rating idea, but...I am not seeing any stars! The only ones I am seeing are the ones that come from being whacked on the head. Please help.

Hi Pioneer. There is a new Streamer and her name is Patsy and her blog is nannies working for parents. She had her first post and asked for discussions, but it said that the author is not accepting comments at this time, so I was wondering if she made a mistake and doesn't realize her blog won't accept comments? Thought I would just ask you about it. Thanks, Karen

I wish along with the spell check there was a dictionary to give me the correct spelling..like in WORD. Is that possible..would make things easier.

As we enter the holidays I was thinking why not add more religious symbols to the mix? As I'm sure this may cause you to grasp the lawyers phone number, you can add all kinds of different symbols. Just a thought from a loyal blogger. TS

How do I fix the recorded times on my postings? I posted today at about 9 am, but it says that I put it up at 1 am. It's just a wierd nuisance, really. Does it have anything to do with how I created my blog in a different state than the one I live in now? (but that state is only one time zone away...?)

Oh and that last comment was definitely put up at 8:20ish pm 11/28, not 11 pm.

Lena --
Our times are in EST, are you located on the west coast by any chance? If so the times will show 3 hours later than your time zone.

by Pioneer (PM , CC ) on Tuesday November 28, 2006 @ 11:46 PM

Yes, I'm on the west coast - but the time difference is far more than it should be even then. Right now for me it's almost 10 am...

by Lena Samburan (PM , CC ) on Wednesday November 29, 2006 @ 12:49 PM

Huh, it's like the time difference became normal again almost - it's 9:50 and it's saying that it's 12:50, which is what it's supposed to be, according to what you've said...I don't know what was happening, but it's fine now. Thanks, Pioneer!

Pioneer,

Recently at Whit's Whitlings ... they were talking about RSS Feeds ... To the best of my knowledge, I commented:

Whit,

For the sake of clarity, I looked up RSS. Some of what I found is ...

What Is RSS?

How does RSS syndication work? Say you publish a new web page about a particular topic. You want others interested in that topic to know about it. By listing the page as an "item" in your RSS file, you can have the page appear in front of those who read information using RSS readers or "news aggregators" (explained more in my sidebar article, RSS: Your Gateway To News & Blog Content). RSS also allows people to easily add links to your content within their own web pages. Bloggers are a huge core audience that especially does this.

What does RSS stand for? There's a can of worms. RSS as introduced by Netscape in 1999 then later abandoned in 2001 stood for "Rich Site Summary." Another version of RSS pioneered by UserLand Software stands for "Really Simple Syndication." In yet another version, RSS stands for "RDF Site Summary."

RSS is simply a way for others outside of blogstream to "bookmark" a blog they like ... It's not against any rules ... It's available on almost any site you go to so that you can publicly bookmark that site on your blog or web-site and receive regular updates. That's all.

An example of one of those aggregators is Technorati ... If you go to Technorati and put the name of your blog into the search, you would be amazed at the people already subscribing to your blog! I googled the name of my blog and found versions of it in Spanish (maybe Portuguese?) and Korean (maybe Chinese?). I also found a site where a man in California was rewriting my posts word for word on his site and taking credit for writing them himself, or simply signing them anonymous or author unknown. LOL ... I guess that was a compliment?

I don't know that this information has helped your search for answers ... but RSS Feeds are quite harmless, as you see ... They don't really give anyone any magically elevated numbers ...

Joey and I have an on-line business. One way to increase visits to our sites is to use words in the heading that would attract people to what we are selling. I would imagine that same principle would work for blogs ...
For example, if I write an article about child abuse, instead of using a clever title that someone would have to read the article to understand, I would use a title that is more straightforward like "The Effects of Child Abuse" or "Signs That Your Child May Be Abused" so that when someone is searching for answers and they google, "What are the Effects of Child Abuse?", my article may actually show up in the search right alongside Web MD.

I don't really care a lot about how many people read my blog as long as the right people find comfort there. I share a lot about healing and recovery in the hopes that other people in need of healing or beginning recovery will feel encouraged, validated, and empowered. I am not a therapist or a counselor, and nothing I write can replace those, but everything I write can plant the seed that we all can heal from whatever is hurting us ...

Other people write for other reasons ... who knows what they all are? In blogging, there are no rules ... That's why people like it so much!

Huggggggggggggggggggz,
Taylor

Was that fairly accurate? Could you explain it better than me, please? Thanks!

Hi,
Do you know if it is possible, in an easy step or a few steps to gather all of ones post in a blog to format for printing? I have upwards of 1000 articles and would like to have them printed for a coffee table type of book.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks.
